Hi y’all!
This morning Marie and I got on a train to Berlin from
Hamburg. Our train came 40 minutes early so we missed it and had to get on the
next one. Thank goodness for Marie because I would not be able to get food,
find where I’m going, etc without her. This whole trip has been nothing but fun
because she can get me around in one piece.
Anyways let me tell you some cool things about Germany:
1.
Toilets- IDK why but their toilets work much
better than ours with much less water. It’s crazy. [downside – paying to pee
since I have to go all the time]
2.
$ back for returning bottles – For each bottle
you recycle/return you make 25 cents. Which is great motivation to recycle. Also,
it gives people in poverty a way to earn money.
3.
Bring your friend on public transportation for
FREEE- Marie’s bus ticket lets her bring a friend on for free on weekends and
holidays so actually haven’t paid for any public transportation which leads to
my next point…
4.
Public transportation- too bad America is too
big because public transportation is super cool. You just hop on train/bus/tram and you go where you're going.
5.
Drinking age – not going to lie, I love going
places and being able to get something to drink. I wish they would ID me
though, I just want to show them my ID please :)
6.
Younger people speak English- We went out the
other night and all these people kept speaking to me in German so I would tell
them I didn’t speak German and all the sudden they speak to me in English which
is cool. But also, everyone double takes when I speak English like I’m from the
Southern US because apparently, I look more German than intended.
7.
Bicycles- Thank goodness mom made me learn how
to ride a bike after many years of resentment because being able to see the
city on a bike. I think I need one when I get back to America
The first day we toured the city on a bike and then went to
the “Las Vegas” of Germany. The highlight of that adventure was buying my first
legal drink. Apparently May 25 is “Father’s Day” in Germany. I half freaked out
because I had forgotten but it’s a totally different day in Germany than the
US.
The next day we toured the city some more by bike and then
we did a picnic in the park. Germany has these one-time grills that you can buy
at the grocery store for 3 Euros. It was so easy and the food was great. It gets dark late here so by the time we ate
it was 10pm and we went home and went to bed.
May 27th we went to a beach in Germany. I know I
learned the Map of the world twice this semester, but I constantly find myself
trying to figure out where I am. Anyways so there are beaches in Germany and
the water is 20 degrees colder than the gulf. I didn’t spend a whole lot of
time swimming.
We will be spending the next two days in Berlin and then a
full day in Dusseldorf before flying to London for four days. We have tickets
to see the Reichstag today and plan to see the Berlin Wall. Former President Obama
is in Berlin today for International Church Day so that is neat.
